Why piece rates go wrong by Friday

The drift nobody watches

Under the Horticulture Award, a piecework agreement has to let a competent picker earn meaningfully above the minimum hourly rate. The rate gets set at the start of the block, when the fruit is heavy and the rows are fast. Then the block thins out. The same rate, the same crew, and by Thursday the slower rows mean some pickers' effective hourly earnings have drifted down toward — or under — the floor.

Nobody decided to underpay anyone. The number just moved, and the first time anyone computed it was after the week was over.

Why it always surfaces on Friday

The arithmetic needs two things that traditionally live in different places: the piece counts (a tally book in the shed) and the hours (a timesheet in the office). They meet for the first time when payroll is prepared. That is why the problem is discovered on Friday — the one day of the week when it is too late to do anything about it except pay the difference.

Moving the discovery to Tuesday

When counts and hours land in one record as the day runs, the effective hourly rate is just a division that can happen continuously. That is what AgCore does: each picker's piece earnings sit next to their hours, and anyone trending below the floor is flagged while the block is still being picked.

A Tuesday flag is a decision, not a liability: raise the rate for the thin rows, move the crew, or top up the difference — the farm chooses, days before pay run. A Friday discovery is only ever a cost.
